MLB News: Shohei Ohtani has been the league’s leader in home runs for most of the season. He currently has 40 long balls and there are still two months worth of games to go. On Monday, August 7 he also stole his 15th base of the season. This made him the third fastest to achieve 40 home runs and 15 stolen bases in a single season.
Los Angeles Angeles superstar Shohei Ohtani is the third fastest player to 40 home runs and 15 stolen bases (MLB News).
According to Sarah Langs the fastest player to reach this milestone was Christian Yelich in 2019 when he did it in 109 games. That season he went on to hit 44 home runs and steal 30 bases, but his MVP type of year was cut short due to a knee cap injury. Had that not happened he may have been a member of the elite 40/40 club.
The second fastest player to 40 home runs and 15 stolen bases was Ken Griffey Jr in 111 games. He accomplished this during the 1996 season in which his final numbers in those two categories were 49 home runs and 16 stolen bases.
Shohei Ohtani became the third fastest to reach 40 home runs and 15 stolen bases as it took him 112 games. 15 steals is the second most of his career, but he did manage to swipe 26 bases in 2021 while also belting 46 long balls. It will be interesting to see if he can become a member of the 40/20 club for the second time in his career.
