MLB News: The Oakland Athletics elected to make a surprising roster move post trade deadline by designating a veteran outfielder for assignment. He could draw waiver claim interest from a contending team that is looking to add depth to their outfield.
Oakland Athletics veteran outfielder Ramon Laureano has been designated for assignment (MLB News).
After six big league seasons, all with the Oakland Athletics, Ramon Laureano has been let go. He made his MLB debut in 2018 and put together his best season in 2019 when he hit for a .288 batting average. .860 OPS, and cranked out 24 home runs.
Unfortunately injuries and an 80-game PED suspension have kept him off the field in recent years and in 2023 he already has missed nearly six weeks of time due to injury. In 64 games this year his slash line is a dismal .213/.280/.364 with an 84 OPS+.
Contract with Ramon Laureano is currently in arbitration and would be under team control through the 2025 season. If he does not get picked up from a contending team as a depth add it’s possible that another rebuilding team acquires him.
The corresponding roster move from the Athletics was reinstating Esteury Ruiz and Dany Jimenez. Manny Pina was the other player let go that allowed for both of these players to return. Oakland will be glad to have Esteury Ruiz back for prior to a shoulder injury he was leading the league in stolen bases.
