The Milwaukee Brewers offense exploded for a season-high 14 runs against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday, August 3. On national television it was the rookies for Milwaukee who stepped up to the tune of nine runs batted in. This tied a Brewers franchise record.
Milwaukee Brewers rookies Sal Frelick, Joey Wiemer, and Brice Turang account for nine runs batted in against the Pittsburgh Pirates (MLB News).
In this game Sal Frelick led the way RBI wise with five, Brice Turang had three, and Joey Wiemer one. Sal Frelick’s production came via a two RBI double and three run home run. Brice Turang also had a three run home run. And Joey Wiemer had a RBI double.
According to Sarah Langs this tied a franchise record for RBI’s by rookies in a single game. The only other time Milwaukee has done this was on July 20, 1994. That game was an 11-1 Brewers victory over the Kansas City Royals in which rookies to drive in runs were Matt Mieske (3), Troy O’Leary (2), and Jose Valentin (4).
Earlier in the week against the Washington Nationals the Brewers got another great performance from their rookies as they accounted for five RBI in a win. In that game it was Andruw Monasterio with one RBI, Brice Turang with two, and Joey Wiemer with two.
Milwaukee is leaning heavily upon a lot of rookies this year and they appear to be getting hot at the right time as after their most recent win against the Pirates they have reclaimed the lead in the National League Central division.
