Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo has been vocal about how Damian Lillard has pretty much made him a better player. According to the two-time MVP, he’s now in a place where he’s more than comfortable in conceding the limelight to his superstar teammate.
The caveat, of course, is that this will only work if the Bucks continue winning.
Milwaukee Bucks Star Giannis Antetokounmpo Speaks on Maturity
Giannis believes that he’s reached a certain point in his career where he’s “over myself.” That is, he is no longer bogged down by the incessant desire to come out with a perfect performance night in and night out. This has allowed the former two-time MVP to focus on the more important things:
“I think this is the most mature I’ve ever been,” he said, via Jim Owczarski of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “Like, I’m over myself. I’m able to get to my spot better and execute. And if the ball doesn’t go in, I’m OK with it.
“I think it’s called abundance mentality. I know what I’ve done in the past and that gives me like, confidence, and I’m able to go out there and execute without thinking, not having self-doubts about myself or think I’m not good enough. Kind of like being OK with me. So, that allows me to play good basketball. Mentally, I’m in a very good place.”
Giannis Still Gunning for MVP Title
This does not mean, however, that Antetokounmpo has lost sight of the individual accolades that come with his strong play:
“No. No. It’s just maturity,” he allowed. “Like, I know what I’m capable of, I know who I am and I know what makes me tick.”
At the moment, Giannis is still in the running for this season’s MVP title. As he said, this is still something that he holds dear to his heart. At this point, though, it is not the be-all and end-all of everything.
After all, Antetokounmpo already has two of those trophies sitting at home.
