The Green Bay Packers have one of the most interesting stories on offense heading into the 2024 season. Despite being one of the youngest teams in the NFL, they were playing as one of the best teams in the league during the latter half of the 2023 season.
Jordan Love and the ample amount of young weapons around him put on an absolute show, going 7-3 In their final 10 games of the season. That included a dominant win over the Dallas Cowboys in the playoffs.
The 2024 off-season has seen a number of changes on the offensive side of the ball, so much so that one running back is on a list you don’t want to be on.
Green Bay Packers Running Back Gets Tough News Prior To The Start Of The 2024 Season
Alex Ballentine of Bleacher Report highlighted a few Packers players who need to perform well if they don’t want to be cut. Emanuel Wilson was on that list:
Running back is going to be one of the most intriguing positions to watch in camp. We know that Josh Jacobs is going to be the lead back, but there are plenty of questions around the position after that.
The Packers brought back AJ Dillon on a cheap one-year deal. But they also used a third-round pick on MarShawn Lloyd, setting up a battle between the two to be the second back in the rotation.
Then there’s Emanuel Wilson. Matthew Berry of NBC Sports noted back at the combine that the Packers really liked Wilson and he would get a shot to be the second running back, allowing them to move on from Dillon.
It’s an interesting nugget given that they not only retained Dillon, but also drafted Lloyd. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the Packers don’t like Wilson. It just means that there may have been others in the building that wanted as much competition as possible.
There’s a wide range of outcomes for Wilson. Maybe he convinces the Packers to carry four running backs. Maybe he makes Dillon completely expendable and Green Bay rolls with Jacobs, Lloyd and Wilson.
But there’s a distinct possibility he’s not on the roster if he doesn’t put together a great camp.
Almost every year, there is at least one undrafted free agent that captures the heart of the Packers fanbase. In the preseason last year, there were three players in particular: Malik Heath, Brenton Cox, and Emanuel Wilson. Last season, Heath, a wide receiver, and Cox, an edge rusher, was named to the 53-man roster.
The sentimental favorite was Wilson, who scored two touchdowns on the 14th anniversary of his father’s death with six carries and 111 yards.
One season later his status seems seriously in doubt and he will once again need to shine during training camp and the pre-season to make it on team.
