When Doc Rivers agreed to take on the job as the new Milwaukee Bucks head coach, he had to turn his back on his role as an ESPN broadcaster. The tenured shot-caller signed a deal with ESPN last year after parting ways with the Philadelphia 76ers, and the network signed him on as part of their so-called A-team with Mike Breen and Doris Burke for their famed NBA Filas coverage.
With Rivers out of the picture, ESPN had to bring in someone else to fill the void that he had left. As it turns out, this has fallen on the shoulders of former Milwaukee Bucks guard J.J. Redick.
Milwaukee Bucks Coach Doc Rivers to Be Replaced by J.J. Redick at ESPN
According to league insider Andrew Marchand of The Athletic, ESPN had decided to promote Redick to the highly-coveted role:
“JJ Redick will join Mike Breen and Doris Burke on ABC/ESPN’s NBA Finals broadcast team, sources briefed on the network’s decision told The Athletic,” Marchand reported.
Redick’s rise at ESPN has been nothing short of meteoric. He first made his name in the media with the success of his podcast, The Old Man & the Three. Upon his retirement from the NBA in 2021, the 6-foot-3 shooting guard signed with the network. He joined Stephen A. Smith on First Take before being assigned to game coverage.
Mike Breen and Doris Burke are the cream of the crop in ESPN and the NBA Finals gig is pretty much as prestigious as it gets, so this is obviously a massive development in Redick’s career as a broadcaster.
