Tuesday night’s matchup between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Miami Heat does not only present itself as a contest between two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. It is also an opportunity for two of the most successful coaches in NBA history to go toe-to-toe as Doc Rivers battles a familiar foe in Erik Spoelstra.
As it turns out, however, Coach Doc might just have an unfair advantage over his compatriot.
Milwaukee Bucks Coach Doc Rivers Jokes About Erik Spoelstra Showdown
In case you missed it, Rivers worked as a broadcaster for ESPN earlier this season before he decided to take on the Bucks job. Just recently, the tenured shot-caller got an opportunity to cover Miami’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Rivers spoke to Spoelstra during that high-profile matchup but at that time, it was a conversation between a coach and a member of the media. Apparently, Coach Spo may have spilled a bit too much:
“Eric gave me all the secrets,” Rivers joked before Tuesday’s game, via Gabe Stoltz of Brew Hoop.
Rivers was obviously kidding, but there has to be some truth behind this. At that time, Spoelstra had no idea that Rivers was going to be returning as a head coach anytime soon, so he may have inadvertently revealed some of his tactics. Either way, Rivers is one of the brightest minds this game has ever seen, so he must have picked up something during that conversation.
Whatever the case might be, we will all still be treated to a showdown between two of the greatest tacticians in the league today.
