If you give many fans of 80s and 90s NBA basketball a listen, you would likely hear them talk about how those eras were vastly superior to today’s in terms of talent. Milwaukee Bucks head coach Doc Rivers likes to think that the opposite of that notion is true, believing that the talent of today’s players in general is just off the charts compared with previous iterations, particularly in the frontcourt positions.
Milwaukee Bucks HC Doc Rivers Sounds Off On Talent In Today’s NBA Compared With His Era’s
“We don’t give enough credit to the skill of the players. These players are just more skilled. Back then, we didn’t have 5’s coming down and shooting threes,” Rivers said before the start of Tuesday night’s matchup between the Bucks and the Phoenix Suns (via Shane Young of Forbes Sports).
Regardless of where one stands on this topic, it’s hard to deny that what Rivers said carries weight. After all, way before he became head coach of the Milwaukee Bucks, he played for a long time in the NBA. He suited up for different teams during his career in the league which started with the Atlanta Hawks in the 1983 season and ended in the 1995-96 campaign with the San Antonio Spurs.
By no means was Rivers saying that there was not much talent during his time. That’s a preposterous thought because his era gave basketball the likes of Patrick Ewing, Hakeem Olajuwon, Karl Malone, David Robinson, and many others. As the Bucks coach, Rivers is mentoring one of the best big men in the game today in the form of Giannis Antetokounmpo, who has the skills of a guard but also the size and length of a center.
