So much has been said about Damian Lillard’s earth-shattering blockbuster trade to the Milwaukee Bucks. All in all, I feel that the basketball world is still in a state of shock as we all try to process what a Giannis Anteotkounmpo-Damian Lillard pairing will look like on the basketball court.
For Portland Trail Blazers fans, however, there’s no denying that bidding farewell to their now-former cornerstone superstar is no easy task — regardless of how messy their divorce might have been.
Byron Scott Speaks Out on Damian Lillard’s Trade to Milwaukee Bucks
Three-time NBA champion and former head coach Byron Scott has chimed in on this landscape-shifting deal. The 62-year-old had a message for Blazers fans who might still be feeling a bit down by all this:
“I think, obviously, Damian joining the Bucks — a team that won a championship a couple years ago, and they got one of the best players, if not the best player in the league, in the Greek Freak, as I call him … and adding Damian, who is motivated, who wants to win a championship, who has given his heart and soul to the Portland area — I think they should be not so much upset that he’s left, but they should be happy for him to get a chance to win,” Scott said, via TMZ Sports.
Scott actually makes sense here. After all that Lillard has done for the Blazers organization and the city of Portland over the past 11 years, the least they could do is to be happy for him.
Dame gave everything he could during his tenure with the team, but unfortunately, he was never able to bring the team to the promised land. He has the opportunity to do just that with the Bucks and Byron Scott believes that the Portland faithful should be rooting for him.
To be fair, the Blazers did grant Lillard’s wish to move on. At 33, Dame is no spring chicken and more than a few folks will argue that he was wasting away his final prime years in Portland with a team that was on the brink of a full rebuild.
The Blazers get to do just that now, and the fact that they got a massive haul from the Lillard trade sets them on the right path. On the other hand, Dame is finally in a viable position to win his first-ever championship. Sad as it might be, it’s still a win-win for all parties involved.
