Bobby Portis Gets Honest on Doc Rivers’ Fit With Milwaukee Bucks

The Milwaukee Bucks made some noise last week when it fired Adrian Griffin and hired Doc Rivers a few days after. While Giannis Antetokounmpo refuted certain allegations about his part on the matter, Bobby Portis shared some positive insight about the move to hire Rivers.

Speaking before the media, the Bucks’ reserve pointed out the positive things Rivers is bringing to the table.

“Great voice. Someone obviously who has had success in this league, who has respect in this league. Big name coach. Top 15 coach of all time. You can go on and on, but (I) feel like he’s a great fit. Obviously, his number’s in the rafters here, so what better team to coach? … That’s cool. Be on the sideline, then look up and see your name up there, that’s dope in itself. Great guy. Talked to him today. He’s on board with us and knows that the expectations of this team are really high, and I think he’s ready for it,” Portis said,

Judging from Portis’ perspective on Rivers, it looks like there’s a lot of respect on the players’ part when it comes to the one-time Coach of the Year awardee. Moreover, the Bucks’ big man is obviously excited to play under Rivers’ guidance.

Along with the respect Portis has for Rivers, he also expressed his excitement about playing for him.

“It’s going to be fun just to get coached by someone who has something to prove as well. Being on the team with other guys, who obviously, we all have something to prove. Not saying we failed over the last couple of years, but we didn’t achieve what was sought out to be the goal, so having a coach that’s low-key in the same boat as us is great. “It’s refreshing as well to have everybody on the same page and have guys that ultimately have a little chip on their shoulder,” Portis added.

The Bucks’ reserve big man alluded to Rivers’ two coaching stints with the Los Angeles Clippers and Philadelphia 76ers. During his time with these teams, Rivers was under scrutiny for choking in the postseason and wasting the talent of his superstar players.

With Rivers as the Bucks’ head coach now, there’s a growing sense of optimism that he can steer the team toward greatness this season. And with Portis’ opinion about his hiring, it only makes sense for the team to get behind their new head coach in their quest to become champions.
