After a day off on Thursday, the Milwaukee Brewers are ready to begin a three-game series this weekend at home against the San Diego Padres. They are in the midst of a five-game homestand before facing the Chicago Cubs next week on the road.
Milwaukee Brewers: Series Preview vs. San Diego Padres
Milwaukee currently leads the National League Central with a 70-57 record this season and has a three-game lead on the Chicago Cubs (67-60) and a four-game lead on the Cincinnati Reds (67-62).
As for San Diego, the 2023 season has not gone as planned for them. They have a 61-67 record on the campaign and are all but out of the National League Wild Card playoff race. The Padres are in fourth place in the National League West and spent all of that money last offseason to be a contender once again after losing to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS in five games a season ago.
The probable pitchers for the weekend will include Yu Darvish (8-9 record, 4.35 ERA, 138 K) vs. Brandon Woodruff (2-1 record, 2.89 ERA, 30K) on Friday, Pedro Avila (0-0 record, 1.17 ERA, 28K) vs. Freddy Peralta (10-8 record, 3.97 ERA, 168 K) on Saturday, and Michael Wacha (10-2 record, 2.63 ERA, 85 K) vs. Adrian Houser (5-4 record, 4.28 ERA, 75 K) on Sunday.
Milwaukee Brewers Facing a Trap This Weekend Against the San Diego Padres
This should be a series that the Brewers win against the Padres, but this can easily be a trap. The stats show this weekend for this series that San Diego will be trotting out better starting pitchers than Milwaukee will. However, the Milwaukee Brewers, in the last five games, have scored more runs, and the bats are finally waking up.
The San Diego Padres have only won twice in the last five games and have only scored six or more runs once. Outfielder Juan Soto is the one player in San Diego to watch for this weekend. In 128 games so far this season for the Padres, he has a .250 batting average with 24 home runs and 76 RBIs, along with six stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .399. Also, watch out for Manny Machado.
As for the Milwaukee Brewers, the one player to watch this weekend is shortstop Willy Adames. He has a .214 batting average in 115 games played so far this season for Milwaukee. Adames has hit 21 home runs and 60 RBIs, along with four stolen bases. His on-base percentage is .296. Also, watch out for Christian Yelich.
