The Milwaukee Brewers have already made one trade prior to the July 30 trade deadline as they acquired Aaron Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays. Despite bolstering their starting pitching staff MLB Insider Robert Murray has indicated that the team continues to look for “all pitching” prior to the July 30 deadline.
May “all pitching” include more controllable players?
When the Brewers acquired Aaron Civale for prospect Gregory Barrios they gained control of a pitcher through the 2025 season. Civale is still owned approximately $2.34MM out of his $4.9MM salary and regardless of his 2024 season outcome he should be due for a pay raise via arbitration in 2025. Milwaukee is an organization that operates budget consciously and targeting controllable players takes pressure off pitchers to perform exceptionally well over the final 2-3 months of the season. A few other controllable pitchers that have been in trade rumors this summer include Garret Crochet, Tyler Anderson, Frankie Montas, Cal Quantrill, and Erick Fedde.
Who are rental pitching options that the Milwaukee Brewers could target?
The Brewers most obvious need is the starting rotation, however targeting “all pitching” may include relievers as well. Players with expiring contracts that may be available via trade by July 30 include: Luis Severino, Jack Flaherty, Yusei Kikuchi, Aroldis Chapman, Matt Moore, Tanner Scott, and Carlos Esteves.
Will the Brewers be gaining any pitchers back internally prior to the trade deadline?
Injuries have plagued the Brewers pitching staff this season, but they should be gaining some back in the near future. Enoli Parades and Jared Koenig are on the injured list with tendinitis, but are expected back after the All-Star break. D.L. Hall, Joe Ross, and J.B. Bukauskas additionally are all on the mend along with closer Devin Williams. With all these pitchers expected to return in 2024 the Brewers should look to target some of the premier pitching talents available via trade in order to give themselves the best chance at post season success.
