The Milwaukee Brewers are one contending team that is rumored to be in the market for starting pitchers come the July 30 trade deadline. A lot of attention has been brought to players like Garrett Crochet and Jesus Luzardo, but there is a one former National League Central pitcher that is rapidly becoming a top trade deadline target and GM Matt Arnold should be involved in discussions for him.
GM Matt Arnold must target a premier starting pitcher at this year’s trade deadline.
It’s no secret that the Brewers need starting pitching help right now as their depth is being tested more than ever. This year 12 different players have made starts for them and they currently have guys like DL Hall, Jakob Junis, Joe Ross, and Robert Gasser on the injured list. The good news is that all of these players, potentially including Robert Gasser, are still expected back at various points this season and some may be returning in the near future.
Related: Robert Gasser not officially ruled out for the season (yet).
Assuming no more major injuries occur once these players return the Brewers starting pitching depth from a quantity stand point will be restored. This will happen whether or not a trade is made, so what GM Matt Arnold needs to do is improve the quality of his rotation by targeting a premier starting pitcher who can be this team’s ace. So far this year Colin Rea has been their most consistent starter and Opening Day pitcher Freddy Peralta has recently fallen upon hard times.
One former St. Louis Cardinals starting pitcher should be a trade target for the Milwaukee Brewers.
From 2017-2023 St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Jack Flaherty went through several highs and lows. Injuries played a big factor in his performance, but all together he ended his Cardinals tenure with a 3.58 ERA. This year he is playing for the Detroit Tigers and has recently strung together a 16.2 scoreless innings streak. His 2024 season ERA across 13 starts has lowered to 3.01 as a result and he is quickly increasing his stock prior to this year’s trade deadline.
Would the Detroit Tigers trade Jack Flaherty?
At the time of this publication the Detroit Tigers have a 34-38 record and are six games back of the final American League Wild Card spot. If the season ended today three of the Tigers division opponents (Cleveland Guardians, Kansas City Royals, and Minnesota Twins) would make the playoffs. Jack Flaherty signed a one year, $14 million deal last off-season, so given their current positioning it makes sense that they trade him.
GM Matt Arnold should be calling the Tigers to see what their asking price is. Flaherty is a rental and will cost a lot less in terms of prospect capital than Garrett Crochet and Jesus Luzardo.
