This year the Milwaukee Brewers starting pitching depth is being tested like never before. They began the year without two elite arms at the top of the rotation (Corbin Burnes traded and Brandon Woodruff injured) and numerous pitchers like Wade Miley, DL Hall, Joe Ross, Jakob Junis, and most recently Robert Gasser have since landed on the injured list.
Milwaukee Brewers manager Pat Murphy’s latest comments show how much their starting pitching depth is being tested.

Despite the continued concerns in regard to starting pitching depth manager Pat Murphy found a way to make the situation slightly humerus. Prior to the Philadelphia Phillies series concluding, when Aaron Ashby made a spot start and Robert Gasser was placed on the IL, Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel indicated that Murphy relayed that everyone is in consideration to pitch. This includes if you are throwing the ball well from the outfield.
“If you’re in our organization right now and you’re healthy and you’re throwing it forward, you’re being considered. If you throw good from the outfield one day, you might be considered, too.”
Pat Murphy confirmed two specific players in consideration for a big league promotion that includes their sixth ranked prospect.

When specifically asked about sixth ranked prospect Carlos Rodriguez and unranked pitcher Chad Patrick manager Pat Murphy confirmed that both had been in discussions for a big league call up. Rodriguez has had a share of organizational pitcher of the year each of the past two seasons and Patrick is having a great season in Triple-A.
Asked Pat Murphy whether right-hander Carlos Rodriguez (International League pitcher of the month) or right-hander Chad Patrick have been in discussions for a callup considering all the injury problems, and he confirmed they have been.

Looking at the 2024 statistics of Carlos Rodriguez and Chad Patrick.

Right-handed pitcher Carlos Rodriguez got off to an uncharacteristically bad start to the 2024 season, but since the calendar flipped to May he has been very good. Over his last six starts he has not allowed more than three earned runs in an outing and he has four quality starts during this stretch. His ERA has lowered from 8.13 on April 28 to 5.17 as of June 5.
25 year old Chad Patrick, also a right-handed pitcher, is off to a great start during his first year in the Brewers organization. He was acquired during the off-season as the return in the Abraham Toro trade to the Oakland Athletics and he currently has a 2.87 ERA across 53.1 innings pitched. He has a 12 strikeout game to his name this year and overall has been a reliable arm for the Nashville Sounds in Triple-A.

It will be interesting to see how the Brewers manage their starting rotation going forward, especially with Robert Gasser sidelined and Aaron Ashby delivering a solid outing. Milwaukee has off days three out of four Thursdays in June so this may help them ride the wave of pitching injuries, but it also would not be surprising to see either Rodriguez or Patrick make their MLB debuts.
