The Milwaukee Brewers are looking to salvage one game in their series with the Philadelphia Phillies after losing the first two by a combined score of 5-2. When they take the field of play on Wednesday, they are going to turn to left-handed starter Aaron Ashby, who was recently called up from Triple-A Nashville. Left-handed reliever Jared Koenig had started each of the previous two games as the team’s opener.
The decision to use Koenig as the opener was due to the numerous strong left-handed hitters at the top of the Phillies’ lineup. However, the decision to bring Ashby up, despite his struggles in Nashville, is due to the fact that the Brewers have been struggling with injuries to their starting rotation. What is more, yet another one of their starters is headed to the injured list.
The Milwaukee Brewers Are Placing Robert Gasser on the 15-Day IL

Moments ago, the Brewers announced on social media that left-handed rookie starting pitcher Robert Gasser was being placed on the injured list. They also optioned Janson Junk to Triple-A Nashville. In corresponding move, Milwaukee called up Ashby and rookie Tobias Myers.

Gasser is on his way to Los Angeles to get a second opinion on his elbow. Fans may remember that he started the season on the injured list due to bone spurs in his elbow as well.
Myers is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in seven games (six starts) for Milwaukee this season.
Gasser joins a long list of injured Brewers starters: Wade Miley, Jakob Junis, Joe Ross, and DL Hall.
Milwaukee Brewers Manager Pat Murphy Is Desperate for Starting Pitchers after the Robert Gasser Injury

According to Todd Rosiak of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, manager Pat Murphy was asked if other starting pitchers down in Nashville, such as Carlos Rodriguez, were considered as an option for Milwaukee. Murphy confirmed that they had.
He also said:
“If you’re in our organization right now and you’re healthy and you’re throwing it forward, you’re being considered. If you throw good from the outfield one day, you might be considered, too.”
As humorous as his comment is, it does show the great level of concern there is for Milwaukee’s starting rotation. They remain in first place by six games over the Chicago Cubs for now, but the will need to add starting pitching sooner rather than later.
One can be sure that general manager Matt Arnold will certainly be looking for a starter or two ahead of Major League Baseball’s trade deadline.
