The Milwaukee Brewers will be faced with some tough decisions this offseason. Under year one of at the time new GM Matt Arnold the arbitration prices on some top players rose. The 2024 projections reveal more of the same as approximately $70 MM worth of salary is estimated over 12 arbitration players. It is quite possible that Milwaukee parts ways with some popular players this winter and already shortstop Willy Adames is one of those players being mentioned in trade rumors.
MLB Insider links Milwaukee Brewers shortstop Willy Adames to the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves.
On Robert Murray’s latest episode of The Baseball Insiders he dove into the Brewers off-season situation. He points out that last off-season both the Dodgers and Braves called Matt Arnold and acquired about his availability. It is quite likely that this same scenario will occur again this winter, but the big question is will Milwaukee pull the trigger on a trade?
What makes this winter different from last is that Willy Adames is now entering his final year of arbitration. His 2024 projected salary is $12.4 MM. Regardless of where he plays next summer he will command a large contract once free agent eligible and players like Trae Turner, Xander Bogaerts, and Dansby Swanson helped set that market price last year.
The tough thing with Willy Adames is that he is coming off of a down offensive season but a tremendous year in the field in which he finished third among shortstop in Def, third in UZR, and sixth in DRS. At the plate he slashed .217/.310/407 with 24 home runs, 80 RBI, and a 95 OPS+.
It stinks that the Brewers will have to consider trading him this off-season, but the reality is that on the open market he will likely still command more than Milwaukee is willing to put on the table. What Matt Arnold and company are tasked with is figuring out whether or not they should trade him or have him play out one more year in Milwaukee.
