Rumors regarding David Stearns signing with the New York Mets are starting to heat up again. Last week USA Today’s Bob Nightengale leaked that upon the conclusion of the 2023 season David Stearns will sign with the Mets. Now Baseball Columnist Jon Heyman is suggesting that a monster deal is on the horizon and that current Brewers manager Craig Counsell could follow David Stearns to the big apple.
David Stearns could sign a monster contract with the New York Mets and bring manager Craig Counsell with him.
Jon Heyman discussed this possibility in his latest column. He indicated that David Stearns is expected to go to the New York Mets and that Craig Counsell could follow him wherever he goes.
Rumors suggest Mets owner Steve Cohen and Stearns could possibly get together on a monster deal — maybe the biggest ever for a baseball executive — for Stearns to come to Queens as the leader of the team’s baseball operations, presumably with a baseball president title.
Some suggest universally respected manager Craig Counsell, a free agent after 2023, is a natural to join Stearns wherever he goes. Multiple teams have called with interest in Counsell, so he can call his shot.
Attanasio told him he’d re-sign him on a one-year deal, a multiyear deal or give him time off, whatever he prefers, Counsell, from the Milwaukee suburb Whitefish Bay, might consider taking time to watch his two sons, who play college baseball, and two daughters, who are high school athletes.
It is not surprising to hear that David Stearns could land a monster deal. He is going to be a highly coveted MLB executive free agent this offseason. Given the fact that he cited burnout as his reason for stepping down as president of baseball operations with the Brewers there has been some question as to if he would return to a similar role, but per Jon Heyman this is a real possibility.
It is shocking to see Jon Heyman mention manager Craig Counsell following David Stearns wherever he goes and that he has received interest from other clubs. As Heyman indicated Counsell is at a point in his life where he may want to step away to watch and spend time with his children, but the fact that he has not signed a contract extension with the Brewers yet implies that he could be keeping all of his options open.
It will be interesting to see what happens with both David Stearns and Craig Counsell this offseason. Teams cannot officially reach out to David Stearns until the conclusion of the season and he declined to be interviewed regarding these rumors.
