The Milwaukee Brewers have made somewhat of a surprising move as they added a veteran minor league outfielder to their 40-man roster. This 27 year old was traded by the Cleveland Guardians to the Brew Crew last August in exchange for cash. He now tentatively has a spot with the team for 2024.
Veteran outfielder Chris Roller was added to the Milwaukee Brewers 40-man roster.
After being acquired in August of 2023 Chris Roller reported to the Brewers Triple-A affiliate the Nashville Sounds. He appeared in 16 games for them and slashed .364/.493/.618. Overall in 2023 he batted .247/.394/.449 with 15 home runs, 67 RBI, 68 walks, and 19 stolen bases.
As a defender Chris Roller can play center field and is very solid at the position. Defense has been a point of emphasis since Matt Arnold took over one year ago and this roster transaction is another example of that.
One big reason as to why the Brewers made this move is that he was set to be a free agent this offseason. By adding him to the 40-man roster Milwaukee retained the rights to his contract. A lot can happen over the winter months, so it will be interesting to see if he remains on the roster come Opening Day in 2024.
Additional outfielders currently on the 40-man roster that could factor into next year’s plans include Christian Yelich, Tyrone Taylor, Garrett Mitchell, Sal Frelick, Joey Wiemer, Blake Perkins, and Mark Canha. The Brewers will have to make a decision on Mark Canha’s club option this winter and also have top prospect Jackson Chourio knocking on the door of MLB playing time.
