The New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers are heading into the 2024 season with Championship aspirations. The 2023 season derailed immediately for their franchise, however, that has likely only provided more motivation for the team heading into the 2024 season.
The Jets have been more than lenient when it comes to bringing in personnel around Rodgers that he wants. Multiple former teammates are still on the roster going into this season.
There is one report surfacing that suggests the Jets tried to change the responsibilities of one coach currently on the team.
The New York Jets Tried To Make A Massive Change That Would Have Directly Impacted Aaron Rodgers
According to Sayre Bedinger of FanSided:
According to Connor Hughes of SNY in New York, the Jets made “legitimate attempts” this offseason to hire someone who would essentially replace Nathaniel Hackett.
“Not as a new offensive coordinator, but a title above who would run the show. The Jets had enough things they needed to address this offseason without replacing areas they’re content with. That pursuit tells me, internally, there are legitimate concerns with Hackett’s ability to successfully run things.
It almost feels like the Jets are putting so much faith in Aaron Rodgers’ ability to correct Hackett’s wrongdoings. Sources spoke of many, many times last summer where Hackett called a play, then Rodgers changed it completely at the line. They figure he can do the same come the regular season.”
– Connor Hughes, SNY
Giving the quarterback the ability to make changes at the line of scrimmage is not new to the NFL. Giving legendary quarterbacks full reign at the line of scrimmage is certainly not new, either, especially if you ever watched Peyton Manning. But giving the quarterback autonomy over the offensive coordinator? Well, that’s pretty rare, and it’s not exactly setting up Aaron Rodgers for success.
The Jets Will Have Their Work Cut Out For Them Right Away In 2024
In the opening game of Rodgers’ comeback season, the New York Jets will travel to San Francisco to face the defending NFC champions on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”
A prime-time game will be played for Rodgers and the Jets for the second consecutive year in Week 1. During his Jets debut on Sept. 11, the four-time MVP tore his left Achilles on the fourth snap and missed the rest of the season.
This is a fascinating quarterback matchup, as Rodgers faces Brock Purdy, the former Mr. Irrelevant of 2022 and one of the league’s biggest success stories. Rodgers has a 6-3 regular season career record against the 49ers, but San Francisco has eliminated Rodgers from the playoffs three times over the last decade +.
