The Milwaukee Brewers have made a roster transaction prior to the series finale against the Washington Nationals. Coming back from injury is outfielder Blake Perkins and being optioned down to Triple-A is Joey Wiemer.
Struggling Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Joey Wiemer has been optioned to Triple-A.
Joey Wiemer joined the Brewers big league roster the game after opening day. A hamstring injury to Luis Urias moved Brian Anderson from right field to third base thus creating a need for another outfielder. With Milwaukee he has played exceptional defense, but his ability to be a contribute at the plate has been inconsistent.
Lately Joey Wiemer has been in an unbreakable slump at the plate. He last homered on July 31 and since August 20 he is slashing .071/.188/.143. Strikeouts have been a big issue for him which has further prevented him from being able to utilize his speed on the bases.
As a rookie who has played more games than ever this year, it is possible that Joey Wiemer is running out of gas. Manager Craig Counsell doesn’t think this is a ran out of gas issue, rather he attributes his ongoing slump to a change in playing time and struggling to adjust.
“I think he’s struggling at the plate. I don’t know that there’s any question about that. When Sal (Frelick) got here, Joey’s playing situation changed, and that’s been different for him. He has not been in there every day and that’s been harder for him, I think. That’s just part of it. That’s another adjustment that a young player has to make. We want those adjustment to happen overnight and very quickly and they don’t always happen that way.”
Right now it’s hard to say if Joey Wiemer will get the opportunity to be on the Brewers post season roster or not, but he will get a little bit of time in Triple-A to get some consistent at-bats.

As for Blake Perkins, he had been on the injured list since August 11 with an oblique strain. Similar to Joey Wiemer he is an excellent defender but his versatility as a switch hitter definitely adds value to the roster.
