Former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns is now a few months into his new gig as the New York Mets president of baseball operations. This is his first off-season with the Mets and he has been tasked with re-tooling a team that sold a lot of MLB assets last summer.
Prior to Winter Meetings starting David Stearns did make a few moves. He signed free agents Joey Wendle, Austin Adams, and Luis Severino. Recently he also claimed a former player of his that he originally drafted with the Brewers in 2016 and then traded to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021.
David Stearns, now with the New York Mets, claims former Milwaukee Brewers prospect and recent Seattle Mariners outfielder Cooper Hummel.
Cooper Hummel was drafted by David Stearns as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2016. The 16th round pick had to grind his way up the minor league ranks and eventually he was traded alongside Alberto Ciprian to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2021. That was the deal that netted the Brewers Eduardo Escobar.
In 2022 Cooper Hummel made his MLB debut with the Diamondbacks. Over 66 games in the big leagues he struggled mightily and last off-season he was traded to the Seattle Mariners in exchange for former rookie of the year Kyle Lewis. The Mariners gave him just 23 big league at-bats in 2023 and did not announce that they were removing him from their 40-man roster until it became known that David Stearns claimed him.
As a new member of the Mets Cooper Hummel joins a New York roster that consists of outfielders Jeff McNeil, Starling Marte, DJ Stewart, and Brandon Nimmo. Cooper Hummel doesn’t immediately slot in as a favorite to make the opening day roster, but he does have one minor league option remaining and could provide some depth.
