The Milwaukee Brewers starting pitching limits are currently being tested. As it stands today Brandon Woodruff, Wade Miley, Eric Lauer, and Aaron Ashby are all on the injured list. They recently signed veteran Julio Teheran to a contract, but they could also look internally to fill gaps in the starting rotation.
On the 40-man roster Janson Junk is a call up candidate for he has already started a game for the Brewers this year. Ethan Small has been primarily used as a reliever in the minor leagues this year, but he has the ability to work multiple innings.
One player that is making some noise with his swing and miss stuff is left-handed pitcher Robert Gasser. He came to Milwaukee during the Josh Hader trade last season and is currently the organization’s seventh ranked prospect. This year he has 47 strikeouts in 38 innings pitched. He does however have a 4.74 ERA and has issued 25 walks.
Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold is open to the idea of promoting Robert Gasser to the big leagues.
Here is what Matt Arnold had to say regarding the idea of promoting Robert Gasser to the Major Leagues.
“Yeah, I think we would be open to that. It’s really dictated on what our needs are at the big league level and what he’s ready for. I’ll lean on our pitching coaches here with [Chris] Hook and Jim [Henderson] and also with Jeremy and [Triple-A manager] Rick Sweet to see what’s best for him and the organization.
“Sure, we’ve talked about him [for a callup]. It’s just one of those things where you want to be sure when the time is right for him. He’s young and he’s moved fast through the Minor Leagues. We want to be cautious and be sure he’s ready for the next step. It’s a big step. But he has every ingredient to do it.”
Matt Arnold also commented on Robert Gassers’ high walk rate.
“That’s certainly a factor for him, just like every other guy. You have to harness the arsenal. I think he has the ability to do that because he’s really smart. He’s smart enough to understand that it’s just about refining. That’s probably the next hurdle for him.”
The Brewers have their work cutout for them in managing through all these injuries to the starting rotation. They currently do not have a starting pitcher announced for Thursday and Robert Gasser is tentatively scheduled to pitch that day for the Nashville Sounds.
Maybe he will get added to the 40-man roster and make his big league debut instead. Janson Junk started and threw five innings on Tuesday night, so he is out of the running for a spot start on Thursday night.
