First year Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold recently joined The Show with MLB Insider Joel Sherman. During his interview one topic that he had to address was the rumors surrounding his predecessor David Stearns potentially joining the New York Mets this off-season.
Milwaukee Brewers GM Matt Arnold speaks out on the rumors surrounding David Stearns to the New York Mets.
Knowing that he would be unable to fully answer the question Joel Sherman flat out asked Matt Arnold if David Stearns was coming to the Mets or not. Unsurprisingly he did not reveal that information, but there are a few major takeaway from his answer.
“What I would say is I have no idea. I love David a ton. I respect everything that he has accomplished here and just as a good friend he is one of the best people you could ever meet either in or outside of baseball.”
“So I know he is going to be successful wherever he decides to go. If that is with the Mets then I’m sure he will have a great level of success there, but honestly if he chooses to do anything in or out of baseball he is going to do very well.”
There are a two interesting takeaways from Matt Arnold’s response. The first is the comment on how “he is going to be successful wherever he decides to go”. This implies that he is indeed going to leave Milwaukee after his contract is up at seasons end for he currently is employed by the Brewers in an advisory role. According to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon at The Athletic he has been able to discuss outside opportunities since the August 1 trade deadline past.
Another comment to dive into is the fact that Matt Arnold says “if he chooses to do anything in or out of baseball”. It is possible that he does not want to return to a job in baseball because he one major reason why he stepped down from the Brewers President of Baseball Operations role was due to fatigue/burnout.
There is one month left in the 2023 MLB regular season and the playoffs continue through October. Soon enough we will know where David Stearns will land, if anywhere.
