The Milwaukee Brewers are currently hoping to retain manager Craig Counsell in which he has been their skipper since 2015. Milwaukee made an offer to him upon conclusion of the 2023 season, but he elected to hear out what the New York Mets and Cleveland Guardians have to offer. Now sources familiar with the situation have both confirmed some rumors as well as provided some updates.
Milwaukee Brewers pursuit to retain manager Craig Counsell receives a massive update.
Up until this point Craig Counsell has interviewed with both the Mets and Guardians. The Houston Astros have expressed interest as well but appear behind the eight-ball in their pursuit for him. Having met with two other ball clubs Craig Counsell now has some leverage to bring back to his discussions with the Brewers.
According to Curt Hogg Brewers manager Matt Arnold and principal owner Mark Attansio will soon determine whether to match the contract compensation that Craig Counsell is seeking. He also indicated that sources have confirmed that Craig Counsell is motivated to reset the managerial salary standard and will not take a hometown discount. This is the first time a Brewers beat reporter has confirmed this for previously national media outlets had suggested it.
Right now it is believed that that minimum pay that Craig Counsell is seeking is $7.00 MM per year. A final decision will also likely be announced before General Manager meetings take place November 7 through the 9. In the meantime the Brewers have also started casting a preliminary net on a managerial search of their own.
All this being said it sounds like we should know the fate of Craig Counsell within the next few days. Current indications are pointing towards him returning to Milwaukee so long as they pay up and meet the salary he desires.
