Even with three pitchers on the IL, the Milwaukee Brewers have been red-hot to start the 2024 regular season. Last night, the Brews took their eighth win of the season during a 7-2 win over the Cincinnati Reds. Milwaukee starting pitcher Wade Miley made his 2024 debut and pitched four solid innings during his first outing of the season.
With the win, the Brewers are now 8-3 with one more game left to play in Cincinnati before they take on the Orioles in Baltimore for a three-game series. Milwaukee is currently a half game behind the Pittsburgh Pirates for first place in the NL Central division. The Reds drop to 6-6 after their second consecutive loss. Cincinnati is three games behind the Pirates for first place in the division.
Milwaukee Brewers Take 2-1 Series Lead Over the Reds After Outstanding 7-2 Win
During the top of the first inning, Brewers left fielder Christian Yelich cracked his fifth home run of the season, a two-run shot out to right field to give his team a quick lead. Yelich has five home runs through the Brewers first 11 games of the season, last year he hit five home runs through the team’s first 39 games. An inning later with runners on first and second, Brewers right fielder Jackson Chourio ripped an RBI single into left field. One batter later, catcher William Contreras hit a two-run ground ball single out to right-center field, giving Milwaukee a 5-0 lead.
In the top of the fourth inning, Chourio hit a sacrifice fly, extending his team’s lead. During the bottom half of the fourth, the Reds finally got on the board as center fielder Stuart Fairchild smashed an RBI single to right field. In the next inning, shortstop Elly De La Cruz smashed his third homer of the season, a solo shot to left field, cutting the Brewers lead to 6-2 after five innings of play. Milwaukee’s center fielder Blake Perkins hit his first home run of the 2024 season when he crushed the ball out to right-center field.
Both bullpens held it down during the ladder half of this ball game allowing no runs to come across. The Milwaukee Brewers would go on to take a 7-2 win, their second straight win, and they would take a 2-1 series lead against the Reds.
Top Performances from the Brewers 7-2 Win
Brewers starter Wade Miley pitched four innings allowing one run on one hit, and two walks. The crazy part about this win for Milwaukee is they only had two strikeouts the entire game. Relievers Bryse Wilson and J.B. Bukauskas each recorded a strikeout. The first three guys in the Brewers lineup, Chourio, Contreras, and Yelich each finished with two RBIs each.
Cincinnati’s young and promising starting pitcher Hunter Greene gave up six earned runs on six hits, and a walk while striking out nine batters in the loss. Compared to the Brewers, the Reds struck out 12 batters next to Milwaukee’s two strikeouts on the night. The Reds only recorded four hits this game, two of those hits came from Elly De La Cruz.
