The Milwaukee Brewers 2023 season got off to an exciting start, in large part due to the fact that they had three rookies in their starting lineup. Unfortunately, Garrett Mitchell injured his shoulder and Brice Turang was sent down to Nashville after a prolonged slump. Now Joey Wiemer, the only one who did not start the season on the Opening Day roster, remains.
Today, Wiemer hit his 10th home run of the season in the Brewers’ game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The young center fielder has been on a tear lately after struggling at a prolonged point during the season. Now, he is on pace to do something only two other Brewers rookies have done: hit 20 home runs.
Joey Wiemer Could Join Exclusive Company in Milwaukee Brewers History if He Gets to 20 Home Runs

Currently, Wiemer is hitting .215/.286/.416 with 10 home runs and 26 RBI in 68 games played. The Brewers have played 70 games, which means Wiemer is nearly on an exact pace to finish with 20 home runs this season. If he does, he will join Prince Fielder and Ryan Braun as the only two rookies to accomplish that feat in franchise history.
Prince Fielder’s 2006 Rookie Season

After a cup of coffee with the Brewers in 2005, Fielder made the 2006 Opening Day roster as their rookie starting first baseman. In what would turn out to be his low-mark for home runs and RBI in a season with Milwaukee, Fielder hit .271/.347/.483 with 28 home runs and 81 RBI. He was the first Brewers rookie ever to hit 20 or more home runs in a season.
Ryan Braun’s 2007 Rookie Season

In what could be considered the best rookie season in Milwaukee Brewers history, Ryan Braun burst onto the season in 2007 and took home NL Rookie of the Year honors for his amazing hitting. After being called up late, Braun appeared in 113 games and hit .324/.370/.634 with 34 home runs and 97 RBI. After a 14-year career spent entirely with the Brewers, Braun is their all-time franchise leader in home runs.
But What About Other Brewers Power Hitters?
To be honest, I was a little astonished when I found out so few Brewers rookies have reached the 20-home run mark in their rookie seasons. Some notable Brewers power hitters did, but played for other teams at the time:
- George Scott- 27 home runs in his rookie season with Boston (before baseball even returned to Milwaukee)
- Gorman Thomas- 10 home runs in his rookie season (did not hit over 20 until his fifth year in the league)
- Robin Yount- three home runs in his rookie season (did not hit 20 home runs until 1980 and only hit 20+ home runs three times)
- Cecil Cooper- eight home runs in his rookie season with Boston (did not hit 20 home runs in a season until he got to Milwaukee)
- Gary Sheffield- five home runs in his rookie season (only hit 21 home runs in parts of four seasons with Milwaukee)
- Geoff Jenkins- nine home runs in his rookie season (21 in his second)
- Richie Sexson- 31 home runs in his rookie season, playing for Cleveland
- Corey Hart- nine home runs in his rookie season (24 in his second)
- Keston Hiura came oh so close- 19 home runs in his rookie season (we all know what happened after that)
