Milwaukee Brewers pitchers and catchers reported to Arizona today to begin spring training and their preparations for the upcoming season. Matt Arnold made a lot of moves this off-season and per the reporting of Todd Rosiak at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel one presumed off-season addition was missing from camp.
Gary Sanchez did not report with all the other pitchers and catchers.
In early February reports from various MLB Insiders indicated that the Brewers and Gary Sanchez had a one year, $7 million deal in place. Milwaukee has still not confirmed this deal and subsequently has not made room on the 40-man roster either. The Brewers did trade former 40-man roster member Clayton Andrew to the New York Yankees, but Andrews had been designated for assignment earlier in order to make room for Jacob Junis.
Why didn’t Gary Sanchez report to camp with all the other Milwaukee Brewers catchers?
At this time Brewers personnel are not commenting on the situation. Todd Rosiak speculated that negotiations and/or physical examinations are still ongoing, but this has not been officially confirmed. It is currently unknown if a deal will be finalized and when he might report to camp.
Gary Sanchez would make four catchers on the Brewers 40-man roster.
If a deal gets done then the Brewers would have four catchers on their 40-man roster. Other players include William Contreras, Eric Haase, and Jeferson Quero. It is unlikely that Milwaukee enters the regular season with four catchers on their roster and some MLB Insiders have suggested that Haase may be traded at some point this spring. What ends up happening with Sanchez will have an impact on the teams roster construction prior to opening day.
