The Milwaukee Brewers may be a good landing spot for free agent Gio Urshela. Currently their depth chart at third base consists of Andruw Monasterio, Owen Miller, Oliver Dunn, and Vinny Capra. Monasterio and Capra have limited MLB experience whereas Dunn has not yet debuted. This leaves the door open for them to sign a veteran player such as Urshela.
Milwaukee Brewers free agent target: third baseman Gio Urshela.
Since debuting with the Cleveland Guardians in 2015 Gio Urshela has played for five different organizations that includes the Los Angeles Angels, Minnesota Twins, and New York Yankees over the past three seasons. Unfortunately a pelvis fracture prematurely ended his 2023 season and he now is a free agent. According to spotrac he has a market value of $7.7 million annually.
At 32 years old and with eight big league seasons under his belt Urshela has established himself as a solid defender, a contact oriented hitter (career strikeout rate of 18%), and as someone who has the ability to slug the ball at times (career .423 slugging percentage with 21 home runs and 34 doubles being his single season career bests). He wouldn’t be a dominant force in the Brewers lineup but he could be a steady and reliable contributor who additionally has 22 games of post season experience.
Recently Will Sammon of The Athletic reported that the New York Mets and Yankees were interested in Gio Urshela. MLB Trade Rumors speculated that he additionally would be a good fit for the Brewers. If he remains available into the spring Milwaukee could look to sign him for less than Spotrac’s estimated $7.7 million.
