After losing two out of three games to the Royals in Kansas City, the Milwaukee Brewers would head back home and move on to a four-game series with division rival St Louis Cardinals. Last night, during the first game of this series, the Brewers took full advantage of their divisional rival as they took a 7-1 win in front of their hometown crowd to record their 22nd win of the season.
Milwaukee lit up Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray who gave up multiple home runs in this game. This was the first game since 2021 where Gray has given up multiple home runs on the mound. The Brewers are a half-game above the Chicago Cubs for first place in the NL Central. With the loss, St.Louis is 15-22, last in the NL Central standings, seven games behind the Brewers for first place.
Milwaukee Brewers Crushing 7-1 Win Over the Cardinals
During the bottom of the first inning with runners at second and third base, Brewers first baseman Rhys Hoskins watched a wild pitch fly right past him. Catcher William Contreras dashed home to give Milwaukee the first run of this ballgame. Two pitches later with Hoskins still at the plate, the Brewers first baseman blasted a two-run home run to right-center field to give Milwaukee a quick 3-0 lead. In the next inning, Brewers right fielder Jake Bauers towered a solo homer to right field, extending Milwaukee’s lead to four runs. At the top of the third, Cardinals left fielder Lars Nootbaar drove a solo home run, and St. Louis’ only run of this game to center field.
Brewers Score Three More Runs to Take Easy Win
A few innings later during the bottom of the fifth inning, Brewers left fielder Christian Yelich belted an RBI triple into the right-field corner. Two innings later in the bottom of the seventh, William Contreras hit an RBI single into center field to give Milwaukee a 7-1 lead and an eventual win. The Brewers offense was not so flatfooted as we had seen in past games, as they had seven runs off of 10 hits during this big-time win. We’ll see a new face on the mound during the second game of this series as the Milwaukee Brewers have called up pitcher Robert Gasser who’s ready to make his first start.
Top Performers from the Brewers Win
Brewers starting pitcher Tobias Myers pitched four innings allowing one run on three hits, and four walks while striking out six. Both William Contreras and Christian Yelich went three for four with an RBI, while Rhys Hoskins went one for four with two RBIs in the win. Cardinals starting pitcher Sonny Gray pitched five innings allowing six runs on seven hits, and a walk with six strikeouts. St. Louis center fielder Michael Siani was the only Cardinals player to record multiple hits.
