Milwaukee Brewers spring training standout Eric Haase did not break camp with the big league team. The 31 year old was the hottest hitter on the team, but due to a combination of Gary Sanchez signing and Haase being out of minor league options he was designated for assignment prior to Opening Day.
Eric Haase cleared waivers and elected to remain in the Milwaukee Brewers organization.
Before the Brewers signed Gary Sanchez to a 2024 deal that could see him earning $7 million they elected to sign Eric Haase for $1 million. After being designated for assignment and clearing waivers he had the ability to reject the minor league assignment and become a free agent. He chose not to do this, but had he done so he would have surrendered the $1 million base salary he signed for.
How much playing time will Eric Haase get at Triple-A?
With Haase accepting a minor league assignment he will report to the Nashville Sounds. Top catching prospect Jeferson Quero is on that team along with Nick Kahle and Brian Navarreto. Unfortunately Quero recently sustained a shoulder injury and has no time table for return, so retaining Haase is important for the Brewers catching depth.
GM Matt Arnold offered this update on Jeferson Quero:
* Initial diagnosis is right shoulder subluxation
* Waiting on inflammation to calm down to reassess
* Setting up shoulder care plan
* Next steps determined after inflammation improvesThat is all that is currently known.
