The Milwaukee Brewers made several roster moves/decisions the day after the World Series concluded. They elected to bring back pitcher Colin Rea on a one year deal that includes a 2025 club option. Additionally they declined 2024 contract options on two relief pitchers.
Milwaukee Brewers decline 2024 contract options on LHP Andrew Chafin and LHP Justin Wilson.
Andrew Chafin joined the Brewers via a trade on the first day of August. The Arizona Diamondbacks received struggling reliever Peter Strzelecki in return. At the time Milwaukee desperately needed another southpaw in the bullpen for Justin Wilson was injured while warming up for his 2023 season debut.
With Milwaukee Adrew Chafin posted a 5.82 ERA over 17.0 innings pitched. Overall his 2023 ERA ended up being 4.73 and he never got into a groove with Milwaukee. His struggles made declining his $7.25 MM club option a no brainer.
The other player who had his club option declined was Justin Wilson. As mentioned above an unfortunate injury while warming up in the bullpen resulted in him never making an appearance with the Brewers. Prior to his bullpen injury he had been recovering from elbow surgery. His 2024 club option that Milwaukee declined was worth $2.50 MM.
Looking ahead the Brewers do have two more contract options to make decisions on. Pitcher Wade Miley has a $10.00 MM option looming and Mark Canha $11.50 MM. The decision to accept or decline these options is a bit tougher and it feels like Milwaukee could go either way. It will be interesting to see what Matt Arnold elects to do with these two players.

Not sure about Rea coming back and feel he should have been cut along with the other two.
I’d rather they sign Miley, because Rea was good for a VERY short period and bad most of the season.
It’s also baffling with Ashby coming back, and the likes of Gasser and some others about to make their debuts. I know you need depth and some innings eaters to get through a season, but this is a lateral move at best.
