Former Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Daniel Vogelbach and Rowdy Tellez both received brutal news on Friday evening as they were non-tendered. While once briefly teammates Daniel Vogelbach was let go by the New York Mets and Rowdy Tellez the Brew Crew.
For Daniel Vogelbach he has been on quite the journey since becoming a free agent at the end of the 2021 season. The Pittsburgh Pirates initially signed him, but ended up trading him to the Mets in July of 2022. With New York he hit 19 home runs and drove in 73 RBI over 159 games while posting a.774 OPS and 116 OPS+.
Looking ahead to 2024 Daniel Vogelbach was entering his final year of arbitration and was projected to make $2.60 MM. He also was momentarily reunited with executive David Stearns who initially brought him into the Brewers organization back in 2020.
Daniel Vogelbach was brutally non-tendered by the New York Mets despite former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns calling the shots.
It’s interesting to hear that Daniel Vogelbach was non-tendered. New York has a lot of financial resources, he was temporarily reunited with David Stearns, and he was not projected to make a lot of money in 2024. Ultimately his limitations defensively, lack of speed, and inability to hit against left-handed pitchers may have all contributed to him not being given a contract for the 2024 season.
With the Mets non-tendering Daniel Vogelbach he now joins the free agent pool. He could sign on with a team with the expectation of serving as a designated hitter and playing against right-handed pitchers. This should keep his overall cost to acquire on the low end of things.
