Milwaukee Brewers former ace Corbin Burnes was recently traded to the Baltimore Orioles. With one year left of team control it was inevitable that he was going to be dealt to a new organization at some point. That day came on February 1, which is approximately two weeks from when pitchers and catchers report to spring training.
Trades in baseball are quite common, but it’s always interesting to hear about the moment that a player found out that he was going to be playing elsewhere. For Burnes he received a phone call from Brewers GM Matt Arnold approximately 30 minutes before the media announced the deal.
Corbin Burnes reveals the moment he found out that he was being traded by the Milwaukee Brewers and to the Baltimore Orioles.
While at home, sitting on his couch, and his son on the floor, a phone belonging to Burnes rang. Before answering the call from the Brewers GM he anticipated that he had been traded.
“We had just finished eating dinner. We were sitting down watching TV, my kid screaming at me on the ground wanting to play, and the phone rings. It’s the GM of the Brewers calling and I told my wife as soon as I saw the call come in I knew I had been traded. She said ‘what do you mean’ and I said ‘watch.’
I answer the phone and obviously they give you the spiel of what you meant to the organization for the last six to seven years. Looking for the now and future blah blah blah and then that I had been traded to the Baltimore Orioles.”
