Milwaukee Brewers ace Corbin Burnes made his final regular season start on Thursday against the St. Louis Cardinals. During this appearance his day was intentionally limited to just four innings and 66 pitches in what was a tune up outing in order to get him ready to start Tuesday’s opening game of the Wild Card Series.
During his outing against the Cardinals Corbin Burnes struck out four batters. This brought his season strikeout total to exactly 200. He has now accomplished this in each of the past three seasons and is closing in on one incredible franchise record.
Corbin Burnes is one season away from matching the Milwaukee Brewers franchise leader in consecutive seasons with 200+ strikeouts.
The final numbers for Corbin Burnes in 2023 ended up being 32 starts, 193.2 innings pitched, 200 strikeouts, and a 3.39 ERA. He just missed eclipsing the 200 innings pitched mark for the second consecutive season, but once again he did not miss a turn in the rotation and as mentioned above he did record 200 strikeouts for the third consecutive season.
In the history of the Brewers franchise there is only one other pitcher who has more consecutive seasons of 200+ strikeouts. That Is Yovani Gallardo. He accomplished this during the 2009-2012 seasons in which he fanned 204, 200, 207, and 204 batters during those years.
For Corbin Burnes one big question going forward is if he will even get the opportunity to tie Yovani Gallardo’s franchise record in 2024. Next season will be his final year of team control and there is a lot of speculation that he could be traded this off-season.
