The 2023 Milwaukee Brewers: NL Central Champions
With the Milwaukee Brewers winning the National League Central title by 9 games with a 92-70 record, the Brewers secured the 3 seed in the NL portion of the postseason bracket. That means they will host the 6 seed Arizona Diamondbacks in Milwaukee for a best-of-three series. The winner will travel to Los Angeles for a best-of-five series against the Dodgers.
Considering the 26-player limit for MLB Postseason rosters and the general 13-pitcher maximum, the roster Craig Counsell has put together for the Wild Card Series (which can be different from later rounds should they advance) against the Diamondbacks has been released.

Milwaukee Brewers Wild Card Series Roster Breakdown
Before the start of this postseason, the Brewers had a few noteworthy situations that surely affected the Wild Card Series roster construction. The most significant relates to Brandon Woodruff, who is out for at least the Wild Card Series with a shoulder injury.
Additionally, the stellar performance of RHP Julio Teheran in September coming back from a hip injury was noteworthy, allowing 2 ER on 8 hits, logging 6 Ks over 9 IP and 3 appearances. This however earned him a DFA, though he cleared waivers and was outrighted. This means that Teheran may have been a strategic exclusion here to allow him to rest, and be brought on to the roster should the Brewers advance to the NLDS.
On Sunday I wrote a prediction of the 2023 Wild Card Series roster (before these two developments). There, I had Woodruff and Teheran on the roster, as well as RHP Andrew Chafin, 1B Rowdy Tellez, and OF Garrett Mitchell. These five players are not on the roster, and were replaced by LHP Trevor Megill, RHP Colin Rea, RHP Abner Uribe, OF/DH Jesse Winker, and OF Blake Perkins (who was my first cut).
The inclusion of Jesse Winker on the roster is a startling one that has quickly drawn controversy amongst Brewers fans, though the reasoning is unclear as to why Winker would be rostered in favor of Mitchell’s speed and defensive utility, let alone over Rowdy Tellez as well.
The list of names on the roster compared to what was predicted shows a clear decline in back-end utility on this Wild Card roster. Hopefully, the Brewers can advance from the short series against the Diamondbacks, and we can have these discussions again leading up to an NLDS showdown with the Dodgers.
