While the Milwaukee Brewers decided to sit Brandon Woodruff out for the last regular season series, it looks like he will be resting a little bit more.
Brewers say Woodruff will not pitch in Wild Card Series
It was announced on Monday that Woodruff sustained a shoulder injury and will not pitch in the National League Wild Card Series. According to manager Craig Counsell, his availability for the rest of future series appearances is “up in the air.”
Woody would’ve been scheduled to pitch in Game 2 of the WC series against the Arizona Diamondbacks, but someone else will be filling that role for him. Brewers have said that Freddy Peralta will likely pitch in game 2, but they haven’t committed to any specific arm quite yet.
Counsell told reporters on Monday that Woodruff has a “right shoulder capsular injury…We’re working on a second opinion for Brandon. Frankly, his availability for the postseason is up in the air at this point.”
Woodruff is less than two months shy of returning from the injured list after dealing with shoulder inflammation that put him out for four months. He made 11 regular season starts where he went 5-1 with an ERA of 2.28.
The righty was dealing on the mound after returning from the IL, even pitching a shutout game against the Miami Marlins that took him 106 pitches to complete. He held a 2.13 ERA over eight starts since August, but that shutout complete game could be what triggered the injury to pop back up.
His start against Miami on the 23, he threw 87 pitches over five innings and there was a notable drop in his fastball velocity. After playing catch on Monday, Woodruff told the coaches and trainers how he was feeling, and they made the decision to sit him out of the Wild Card Series.
