The Milwaukee Brewers opening playoff game against the Arizona Diamondbacks did not go as planned as they lost by a score of 6-3. Starting pitcher Corbin Burnes gave up three home runs, Devin Williams threw 31 pitches in the ninth inning, and the offense failed to put up runs after scoring in each of the first two innings.
Milwaukee started this game off on a high note as their first three base runners reached safely and a Carlos Santana base knock gave them a 1-0 lead. In the second inning Tyrone Taylor launched a two run home run to give them a three run lead.
Unfortunately Corbin Burnes struggled during the third through fifth innings. Arizona quickly tied the game thanks to back-to-back home runs in the third inning from Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte. In the fourth another solo home run gave the Diamondbacks a 4-3 lead. Corbin Burnes eventually was chased from the game in the fifth inning after he walked the first two batters in that frame.
After Corbin Burnes was removed from the game the Brewers bullpen did not allow any runs to score until the ninth inning. Abner Uribe cleaned up Burnes’ fifth inning mess and then a combination of Elvis Peguero, Hoby Milner, and Joel Payamps kept it a one run game until Devin Williams gave up a two RBI double in the ninth inning.
Outside of Corbin Burnes struggling one big story line in this game was the Milwaukee Brewers offense leaving 11 runners on base.
What happened to the Milwaukee Brewers offense during game one of the Wild Card Series against the Arizona Diamondbacks?
The Brewers had tons of traffic in this game, but a lot of unfortunate events occurred that prevented them from scoring again after the second inning. For instance, they left the bases loaded in both the third and fifth innings and a few over turned challenges changed the complexion of this game.
In the fifth inning Brice Turang originally was granted first base after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. This would have tied the game, but Arizona challenged the play and it was overturned. The next batter was Tyrone Taylor and he was robbed of a base hit by Diamondbacks third baseman Evan Longoria in which he then went on to double Willy Adames off second base.
During the sixth inning Christian Yelich drew a leadoff walk. He then overran second base after an infield single from William Contreras and a second replay challenge from Arizona showed that he was out. Between Brice Turang’s overturned hit by pitch, Evan Longoria’s incredible catch, and Christian Yelich having a base running blunder all of the following derailed potential big innings.
Milwaukee will quickly have to rebound against Arizona’s ace Zac Gallen. Game two of the series will be Wednesday night at 6:08 PM CT. If the Brewers lose this game then their season will be over, but if they win then they will force a third game that would be played on Thursday evening.
