The Milwaukee Brewers received devastating injury news one day prior to starting a playoff series against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Their presumed game two starting pitcher in Brandon Woodruff was ruled out of the Wild Card Series with a right shoulder injury. This led to an emotional press conference from the 30 year old in which his role will now be cheering the team on.
On the other side of things the Arizona Diamondbacks also had to process this news. They know that not having to face Brandon Woodruff is a big advantage for them, but manager Torey Lovullo also took the time to mention how much he (Woodruff) means to Milwaukee and how he wants to face his competitions best.
Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo has a humble response in wake of injury to Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff.
Torey Lovullo provided the following statement on the injury to Brandon Woodruff and what he means to the Milwaukee Brewers.
“I know it’s probably heartbreaking for [Woodruff], his team, this organization, because of what he means to this team. You always want your competitor’s best, so if you do happen to march on, you can say that you did beat their best. But I know the Brewers have some very capable pitchers to step into that next level and those next roles.
“The common thought is to exhale and say, ‘Well, Woodruff isn’t starting.’ We’re not going to fall for that. They’ve got very capable replacements, and they’re well run. ‘Couns’ is going to find the best guys go out there and help them win a baseball game.”
With Brandon Woodruff out it is likely that the Brewers would turn to Wade Miley to start game three of the series, if necessary. Arizona will be starting rookie Brandon Pfaadt in game one followed by most likely Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly.
Wild Card Series action gets underway on Tuesday, October 3 with the first pitch scheduled for 6:08 PM CT.
