The Milwaukee Brewers brought back a familiar face on Monday.
The team re-signed RHP Brandon Woodruff to a two-year contract, with the financials not being disclosed yet.
Woodruff spent his entire career with the Brewers (2017-2023), and while the two sides were going to part ways. Milwaukee needed pitching depth after trading away Cy Young Award winner Corbin Burnes.
Woodruff is expected to miss most of the 2024 season as he rehabs from right shoulder surgery.
Fan reactions to the Milwaukee Brewers bringing back Brandon Woodruff.
The Milwaukee Brewers made a low-risk move here by signing a player who’s shown to be a top-10 starter in baseball.
Shoulder injuries are tricky, and while it’s tough to expect Woodruff to pitch like he did before, the Brewers have some young talent they can rely on.
Jacob Misiorowski and Robert Gasser will be pitching with the major club at some point and add in DL Hall, Freddy Peralta, Aaron Ashby, and veteran Wade Miley. The pitching staff will be stacked once Woodruff comes back.
But in the short term, fans are excited about the return of Big Woo.

I wanted Woodruff back more than anything Arnold did this winter.

Might as well – he's not going to pitch until 2025, so might as well come back on a deal he'll be guaranteed with his former club.

Finally a class move. For all he’s given to the team. Well done 👍

Why this is a good move for the Milwaukee Brewers?
Right now, the Brewers are infused with young talent. The youth movement is a sign that the Brewers will compete for years to come, but veterans help a franchise win games.
The presence of Woodruff will help Milwaukee this year because he knows the organization well, and there’s potential that if Woodruff’s rehab goes without a hitch. He would be available to pitch in late September.
In the past, Jimmy Nelson and Aaron Ashby missed the entire season after undergoing shoulder surgeries, and the team will be cautious with Woodruff’s rehab, so it is more likely Woodruff won’t pitch again until 2025. General Manager Matt Arnold made a low-cost signing and helped bring back a player who will help this team in the long run.
