Lorenzo Cain is officially retiring from baseball. The always smiling center fielder played seven seasons with the Kansas City Royals and six with the Milwaukee Brewers. He will retire as a member of the Royals this summer during a special ceremony.
Lorenzo Cain said he had opportunities to play after the Brewers released him last summer. His kids wanted him to stay home, so he did. There will be a ceremony for him this summer in Kansas City, where he will officially retire as a Royal. https://t.co/3FiWGkWYHW

Throughout his career, Cain was the ALCS MVP and a World Series champion in 2015, he was a two time All-Star (2015 with the Royals, 2018 with the Brewers), and one time gold glove winner (2019 with Milwaukee). His career slash line is .283/.343/.407 in which he hit 87 home runs, collected 454 RBI, and stole 190 bases over 13 seasons.
Lorenzo Cain has officially retired. He also passed on playing opportunities after his time with the Brewers.
Last season the Milwaukee Brewers DFA’d Lorenzo Cain as he reached 10 years of service time. After clearing waivers, he reportedly drew interest from the Dodgers and Phillies. He also states that Adam Wainwright of the Cardinals reached out to him. Despite struggling offensively, Cain would have been a defensive asset to any team as well as a good clubhouse presence.
The decision to play for another organization was ultimately up to Lorenzo Cain’s kids. Cain says “I left it in the hands of my boys. I said, ‘Hey, do you guys want Daddy to continue to play ball? Or are you ready for Daddy to be done and go home?’ And they said, ‘Dad, we want you to go home.’ And I said, ‘OK, then.’ So I’ve been done. I just haven’t announced it, I guess.”
Prior to today’s official announcement there was a lot of speculation that Cain was going to retire and not return to baseball. In June he provided the following comments, “To say that i’ve played ten plus years in the show, I couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s been a great ride for me… If it’s the end, I can’t be upset about anything.”
It’s been a great career for Lorenzo Cain. Fans of both the Royals and the Brewers were lucky to be able to witness him play during his tenures on both clubs.
