A Green Bay Packers insider thinks something will have to change between Jordan Love and the front office before the beginning of the regular season if they want the quad to play by September. Love’s representation is negotiating with the Packers front office for an extension before the upcoming season.
Jordan Love has been present at OTAs
Love has acted as a good teammate during this process, believing the team will give him a fair deal before Week 1. While other players around the league skip out on OTAs while waiting for a new contract, Love has been showing up for voluntary workouts. However, Love hinted that things could change before the beginning of the season.
Love wouldn’t commit to playing the season without a new deal
As previously discussed on WSH, Love said last week that he wouldn’t commit to playing the 2024 season if the Packers neglected to give him a pay raise:
Reporters asked Love several questions about his contract situation on Tuesday afternoon. Love didn’t want to talk too much about his contract situation but said his agent hadn’t told him to stay away from the Packers facility during off-season workouts. Love was asked if he’d feel comfortable playing for the Packers this season if a new deal wasn’t in place.
We’ll see. I don’t know yet. We’ll see,” Love said.
A Green Bay Packers insider provides an update on the negotiating
Rob Demovsky with ESPN provided an update on where things stand between the Packers and Love regarding his contract negotiation. Demovsky said the Packers have been working on a deal for a while. Demovsky doesn’t think Love would play under the terms of his current deal:
“The Packers couldn’t do anything with Love until May 3, the date of his 2023 extension; NFL rules mandate that contracts can’t be extended within 12 months. But that doesn’t mean they weren’t working on a deal before that.
Love’s attendance and participation in the offseason program suggests he isn’t overly concerned about getting a deal done. The start of training camp could bring more urgency, and while Love said his agents haven’t advised him not to play a game without a new deal, the start of the regular season seems like the latest possible time frame.
After how Love looked in the second half of last season, it’s hard to imagine him playing for the $11 million he is slated to make this season”
Love is looking for a contract similar to what the Los Angeles Chargers are paying Justin Herbert. The difference between $11 million and $50 million seems too large for Love to play in the 2024 season without a nearly $39 million raise.
