It goes without question to say that Amari Rodgers’ time in Green Bay has been nothing short of lackluster. The 2021 third round pick from Clemson gave Packer fans a glimpse of hope when selected by Brian Gutekunst to bolster a wide receiver that was doomed for change. Since then, Gutekunst has selected three other wide receivers, while two of them have had a more prominent role in the offense. Amari Rodgers have been given chances to get on the field as a return specialist, but he has not performed well in that position. The question of whether or not Amari Rodgers has a future in Green Bay needs to be looked at soon. Let’s take a look at three answers to that question:
Option #1: Demote Rodgers To The Practice Squad
This option seems to make the most sense. Amari is a high-middle round draft pick, so Green Bay is not going to be willing to give up on him right away. Additionally, since he has no role in the offense or special teams, this would give Juwann Winfree the opportunity replace Rodgers on the active roster. Aaron Rodgers did advocate for Winfree in the preseason, so all in all, this would be a win-win solution. This would also benefit Amari Rodgers in the sense that there is a lot of injury history and concern with the wide receivers on the active roster. This would still give Rodgers a shot to be promoted back up at some point. It is unclear as well if Sammy Watkins and Randall Cobb will be back next year. This gives Amari Rodgers another chance to compete for a roster spot in 2023.
Option #2: Continue To Find Special Teams Opportunities
If Amari Rodgers continues to be a part of the active roster long-term, Green Bay is going to have to find ways to keep him involved. One way to do this is to find ways to get him time on special teams. Placing him as a kick and punt returner has not worked out. But, there are options on kickoff coverage, punt coverage, etc. The opportunities would be limited, but anything the Packers can do to get him on the field they should do. This option would seem like the last resort, however. No matter how you look at, Green Bay is going to have to make a tough decision on Amari’s future after this season.
Option #3: Create A Trade Package That Includes Jordan Love
This sounds like a trade offer that Green Bay would absolutely refuse to make. However, it would make sense in the long run. It is almost certain that Jordan Love will not have his fifth year option picked up. Trading a player like Love would be a doozy to make, unless there was another added piece. That piece could be Amari Rodgers. There will be a significant amount of teams that could be in the market for a quarterback next season. Miami, Houston, Chicago, Indianapolis, and Detroit to name a few. What would it take to make this trade happen? Truthfully, not much. I would anticipate anywhere from a third or fourth round pick and an added player. Green Bay could use that potential pick to bolster the safety position. Both Love and Rodgers have had rough starts to their careers nonetheless. A change of scenery might be what is best for both players, as well as Green Bay.
