San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan isn’t surprised by the Green Bay Packers’ massive turnaround in the 2023 season. After all, they really took care of the ball in recent weeks.
When the Packers started the campaign with a 2-5 record, it looked like they were headed to another disappointing year. Jordan Love looked like the inexperienced quarterback that he is, while the defense had a lot to work on–with many even calling for defensive coordinator Joe Barry’s head.
Nonetheless, things changed after their Week 8 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. They beat the Los Angeles Rams the following game, preventing them to score a touchdown in a 20-3 win. They lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the match after but went 6-2 in their next eight games following that, a span that saw them score at least 25 points in all their victories while holding their opponents by 24 points or below.
The impressive run saw the Packers make the playoffs as the final Wild Card team. Interestingly, they extended their hot streak in the playoffs, taking down the Dallas Cowboys in a massive upset.
Throughout the said stretch, what stood out for the Green Bay Packers was how well they protected the ball, and Kyle Shanahan definitely noticed it.
Kyle Shanahan Speaks Out on Green Bay Packers’ Turnaround
Ahead of the San Francisco 49ers’ divisional round showdown with the Green Bay Packers, Kyle Shanahan was asked what he believes has been the key to the turnaround for Matt LaFleur’s men.
Interestingly, Shanahan didn’t hesitate in saying that it’s their lack of turnovers that has sparked the major shift in their fate.
“Probably not turning it over. When you don’t turn it over, no matter what happens, you’ve got a chance to win in every game. The fact they’ve only had one pick in 10 games is unbelievable. When you start getting a running game going with that, with a real good defense too, doesn’t surprise me at all,” Shanahan said, via 49ers WebZone.
There’s no lies in what Shanahan said, though. The Packers’ win against the Cowboys is the latest proof of that, with Jordan Love playing perfectly and not throwing an interception in the game.
The 49ers will look to be the ones to end the Packers’ winning streak, though it surely won’t be easy.
