Without a doubt, running back Derrick Henry is going to be one of the biggest fish in the NFL free agency ocean this 2024. Most people expect that Henry will hit the market, with the Green Bay Packers among those viewed as a chief contender for the services of the hulking tailback. The Packers still have AJ Dillon and Aaron Jones, but as pointed out by Max Dible of Heavy, Green Bay has the option to let Dillon go and try to adjust Jones’ contract to make the team’s cap situation more tenable for a potential Henry signing.
Doing so would provide the Packers with an older 1-2 punch in the backfield, though still a potent one given how well Henry played all of last season and how strong Jones came on at the end of the year once healthy. The two together may be more money that most franchises are willing to spend on a running back tandem in the modern NFL, where the position is continuously devalued.
Will The Green Bay Packers Go After Derrick Henry?
Henry just turned 30 last January and Jones hit 29 back in December. That’s advanced running back age, but the star power of those two can’t be denied. Making them the 1-2 option on the ground for the Green Bay Packers sounds like a nightmare for opposing defensive coordinators, and that’s not to mention the continued growth and maturity of the promising quarterback Jordan Love.
But it’s one thing to imagine Henry and Jones on the same team and it’s another to plan for Green Bay’s future excluding the two running backs in the picture, considering how small of a window those players have.
