The Green Bay Packers generated some controversy back in the 2020 offseason when they decided to use a first-round pick on a quarterback, taking Jordan Love of Utah State as the 26th pick of that year’s NFL Draft. A few years later, that decision is seemingly paying off for the Packers, who now know that Love can handle the job under center just fine after the departure of Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay general manager Brian Gutekunst recently joked that he knew way before the draft that Love was going to be THAT guy for his team.
“Sometime in 2019,” Gutekunst said, per Rob Demovsky of ESPN.
Gutekunst followed that up with a more serious take.
“I think [that’s] one of the things that you just never know until they get out there and handle all the things that a quarterback has to handle at the line of scrimmage and lead his football team,” Gutekunst said.
All the qualms and the doubts on whether Love can take over capably as the Packers’ QB1 were all erased in the 2023 NFL season when Love finally became a regular starter. The Packers went 9-8 with him as a starter, while he passed for 4,159 yards and 32 touchdowns with only 11 interceptions.
The Future Is Now For The Green Bay Packers With Jordan Love
While many other teams have murky quarterback pictures, the Packers can consider themselves lucky that they don’t have to spend an entire offseason wondering who will be their starter for the 2024 campaign. Their larger concern is their future with Love beyond the 2024 campaign, as the quarterback only has one more year on his current deal — a bargain at $13.5 million for this year.
