There are always weak spots on a roster heading into training camp year after year, especially with the Green Bay Packers. One of the weakest positions on their roster heading into the 2023 regular season is the tight end room. They have a lot of unknowns at the position heading into this season, especially with a new starting quarterback in Jordan Love.
Packers Tight End Room Not Ideal Heading Into Training Camp
Tight ends can be a quarterback’s best friend, and Aaron Rodgers is no longer in the building. The projected starting tight end on the roster is expected to be rookie Luke Musgrave, who was a second-round pick out of Oregon State. However, he is still currently an unsigned rookie with training camp looming. Musgrave didn’t play much last season because of injury, but hopefully, he will be at full strength for the Green Bay Packers.
The starting tight ends for Green Bay a season ago were Robert Tonyan and Marcedes Lewis. The No. 1 and No. 2 tight-end sports will completely be different for this football team. Lewis was a reliable blocker in the running game and a savvy veteran. They won’t really have any of that this season.
Josiah Deguara is currently the second tight end on the depth chart for them. Last season, he caught 13 passes for 114 yards receiving. Deguara averaged 8.8 yards per catch. They will need him more in the offseason this season.
After him, Tucker Kraft is listed third on the depth chart, and Tyler Davis is listed fourth on the depth chart. Kraft is a rookie from South Dakota State. He was a third-round selection (78th overall pick) in the 2023 NFL Draft. Tucker Kraft missed some time last season with an injury but came back later in the season to help the Jack Rabbits win an FCS National Championship.
Despite missing six games, Tucker Kraft was third on the team with 348 receiving yards and had 27 receptions, fourth on the team in that category. He can be a game-breaker at the position. Kraft looks like a player that can turn a bunch of heads in training camp for the Green Bay Packers and make his way up the depth chart.
Injuries could be the biggest downfall of this position this season. Rookies Luke Musgrave and Tucker Kraft will make the roster, and so will Josiah Degura. The Green Bay Packers will keep three tight ends on the roster, as most teams do, but there are more questions than answers currently at the position.
