Whatever hope Joe Barry had for keeping his defensive coordinator job with the Green Bay Packers seemed to have been crushed when Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers embarrassed his stop unit back in Week 15. As Rob Demovsky of ESPN painted it, the loss to the Bucs seemed to be the beginning of the end of Barry’s tenure as Packers DC.
The breaking point for Barry might have been a Week 15 home loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, when Baker Mayfield put together a 381-yard, four-touchdown performance in a 34-20 victory at Lambeau Field.
The Green Bay Packers’ Loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was the Beginning of Joe Barry’s End as Defensive Coordinator
Mayfield absolutely had a field day torching the Packers stop unit in that game, as he completed 22 of his 28 passes for nearly 400 yards. Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin came away with 155 receiving yards on 10 receptions and 12 targets, while three other Tampa Bay players had at least 40 receiving yards, including Mike Evans, who turned four catches into 57 receiving yards and a touchdown. That was clearly a low point for the Green Bay Packers, who, a week prior, lost to the Tommy DeVito-led New York Giants on the road to the tune of a 24-22 score — a game where DeVito went 17/21 for 158 passing yards and a touchdown with zero interceptions.
It can be recalled that Packers head coach Matt LaFleur was asked about his thoughts on the possibility of finding a new defensive coordinator following that loss to Mayfield and company, but said it was not the best time to think about it. Well, now the people got the answer to that, as Barry is no longer handling Green Bay Packers defense.
