The Green Bay Packers find themselves in the position to make an improbable playoff run. After two straight wins the Packers are 5-6 and sit just outside of the NFC Wild Card picture. The Seahawks and Vikings are all that stands in their way. Both teams are currently 6-5.
As the Packers gear up for possibly their toughest test of the season they decided to move on from one of their veterans.
The Green Bay Packers Release Running Back James Robinson Prior To Matchup With The Kansas City Chiefs
Two offensive players who were promoted to the active 53-man roster last week have been waived by the Green Bay Packers today. Bo Melton and James Robinson were released from the team on Monday and did not practice. Last Thursday, Robinson and Melton both played against the Detroit Lions.
Robinson broke onto the scene in 2020 as an undrafted rookie out of Illinois State. After seeing less playing time in 2021 and having his season cut short by a torn Achilles tendon, he was traded to the Jets in 2022. His stints with the Jets, Giants, and Packers have been limited this year. He was active for the Packers’ Thanksgiving matchup against the Lions, however, he didn’t see a snap.
The team may have someone else they like on the practice squad they like more than Robinson. According to a statement by the Packers in early November, the team signed rookie UDFA Ellis Merriweather to the practice squad:
“Merriweather (6-1, 220), a rookie, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of the University of Massachusetts by the New Orleans Saints on May 15, 2023, and had a short stint on the Saints’ practice squad before being released on Aug. 31.
In his final college season (2022), Merriweather played in 10 games, carrying the ball 150 times for 575 yards (3.8 avg.) as the team’s leading rusher and was named to Phil Steele’s College Football All-Independent second-team. He will wear No. 32 for the Packers.”
