The Green Bay Packers are undergoing a major facelift in the locker room. Whereas previous teams have had multiple seasoned veterans on the roster, this year’s team is compiled of many young players with limited experience. According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the front office made the decision to go young before the 2022 season even ended. Not only did this mean that the team was exploring moving on from Aaron Rodgers, it also meant that meant that other veterans would not be returning.

As a result, this offseason has seen the team move on from Randall Cobb, Dean Lowry, Marcedes Lewis, Adrian Amos, and Mason Crosby. However, while some of them have signed with new teams or are committed to not returning to the Packers, the door is still open for a couple to come back, and PFF believes Green Bay will end up signing one particular free agent veteran.
PFF Predicts the Green Bay Packers Will Re-Sign Safety Adrian Amos
As a result of the Packers’ youth movement, the safety room consists of Darnell Savage, Rudy Ford, seventh round pick Anthony Johnson Jr., and many special teams players. In short, there is not a lot of quality depth at the position and not many seasoned veterans on the defense. For these reasons, PFF argues that the Packers will sign Amos at some point this offseason:
“Amos had long been one of the most consistent, reliable safeties across the NFL, allowing an explosive reception on just 1% of coverage snaps over five seasons from 2017 to 2021 and forcing an incompletion on 17.3% of targets into his coverage over the span, which ranked tied for 21st.
“He took a step back in 2022, earning a 54.2 grade — a career-low mark by more than 15 grading points. However, the Packers added only one safety in the draft in Iowa State’s Anthony Johnson Jr. at No. 242 overall, and after investing so many resources in their defense over the past several offseasons, it wouldn’t make much sense to have a gaping hole on the back end.”
For Matt Schneidman of The Athletic, the Adrian Amos question is a “no brainer:”
“Darnell Savage Jr. and Rudy Ford starting at safety should keep every fan up at night based on their inconsistencies last season. Amos wasn’t great, either, but he’s been sturdy for the better part of the past four seasons and hasn’t missed a game that counts. They should bring Amos back, but I think they’ll roll with what they have.”
Schneidman probably has more insight to what the Packers’ front office will do than an out-of-market publication like PFF. While he agrees that signing Amos makes a ton of sense, he does not think the Packers will make the move.
Only time will tell.
