It’s not everyday you win for being the biggest fan of something. Fortunately, that’s not the case with Tom Grassi, a high school social studies teacher, when he was named the NFL Fan of the Year for being the biggest Green Bay Packers supporter out there.
Grossi’s story as a Green Bay Packers fan started on February 6, 2011, when the team won their 13th NFL championship. Although it all began as a lighthearted joke directed towards his father’s love for the Dallas Cowboys, that act served as a starting point for Grossi’s journey.
At that time, he was a sophomore studying at the State University of New York. After the Packers’ huge Super Bowl win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, Grossi went out of his way to profess how much he loved the team by screaming it out loud for everyone to hear.
“I was the only Packers fan in New Paltz, and everyone knows I’m a Packers fan because I’m the only one there and I’m loud,” Grossi said. “I’m losing my voice screaming.
Since then, Grossi’s love for the team has grown exponentially. Now, he has done more than enough for the Green Bay Packers franchise, and the NFL has taken notice of it.
Tom Grossi Explains How He Won NFL Fan of the Year By Being the Green Bay Packers’ Number One Supporter
In an article posted on the Packers’ official website, Grossi explains what he has done to win the NFL Fan of the Year award.
For starters, Grossi has used his love for the Packers by creating a podcast about the team and having a YouTube channel with more than 600,000 subscribers. He also began several charitable actions that culminated in a viral 30 in 30 campaign, which raised over $500,000 for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and its patients.
This led the NFL to surprise Grossi by inviting him to the league’s New York office under the premise of chronicling the Packers’ history with their fans. Instead of going for that reason, league commissioner Roger Goodell met him and told Grossi that he was chosen from 61,000 nominees to win the 2023 Fan of the Year award.
“I immediately was just filled with so much gratitude for the fans because they took the time to go out, nominate me and fill out of the form, the whole nine yards,” Grossi said.
“I was also really grateful for the Packers because at the same time they didn’t have to pick me. The Packers, of course, being literally my favorite thing since I’ve been 6 years old, to get a call from my favorite team and say that you’re going to represent our team this year as our fan – nothing gets better than that.”
Bear in mind that Grossi started out as a Packers fan in college and began with basically nothing. Now, he has risen above so many people to win this year’s NFL Fan of the Year award, all thanks to his great support for Green Bay.
